Descript is essentially so cheap about small UI and UX details — such as sizing the speaker label column of the editor — that it renders the core functionality of the app too annoying to bother with.
Here's an example[1] using one of the built-in overdub voices, "Malcom".
At the risk of being blunt: on planet earth, the name of who is speaking is generally an important piece of metadata. You don't overflow it to make room for a mile of unusable whitespace.
Realistically, all of the speaker-related patterns need overhaul, along with half the UI/UX. But the speaker label overflow fix is very much needed and takes one line of code to handle.
