Andrew Mason: With all respect, I don't think this one can really be marked "Complete". It looks like you took the function that was already in place (word gap shortening en masse), and simply put a link to it in the toolbar.
I think what's being asked for is the ability to automatically shorten word gaps (or insert room tone) based on the punctuation used in the script. If there's a way to even manually extend or shorten word gaps or clips individually within the script by dragging I haven't been able to find that either.
I appreciate the work you guys do, thanks!

Andrew Mason: As a math teacher, I can use Excel or Python to create my scripts from problems. The ability to incorporate pauses without MANUALLY editing the from the timeline is what we users are looking for. Just adding the "pause" tag and time would dramatically improve an already great product. I have used other text to speech tools and the pause tag has been the most useful object. With the pause tag, I can send the wave file through a file splitter that will look for 4 sec pauses and cut the file into smaller files.

Andrew Mason: YES! This would be INCREDIBLY useful. We're currently in the process of using Overdub to make written coursework available to blind students in my voice. Manually adding gaps between sentences for a long script is extremely time consuming.
My suggestion (from a strictly UI standpoint) would be to expand the functionality of the "Shorten Word Gaps" tool, making it a "Manage Word Gaps" tool. Ideally, to include the option to "Insert [input area to define length of desired gap] Between all Sentences".
While Descript is indeed a "game changing" tool for all of its' current offerings, I (for one, with many equally interested colleagues) would most certainly continue my Pro Subscription for all eternity with this specific, automated flexibility. This feature request should really be moved to the top of the list. It would have an incredible impact on workflow for those looking to automate this necessary part of using Overdub on lengthy scripts.
If this function already exists in some other format that I'm/we're overlooking, please advise. Otherwise, please provide it in some automated way, perhaps as described above.
Thank you.

This is my #1! I would love to be able to edit the transcript and have it change the gaps in audio.
For example, to be able to configure that a gap after a period should default to .25 seconds, after a paragraph to .5 seconds, and when switching between speakers to 1 second. This would save me a wonderful amount of time. This, in conjunction with automated breath-noise extraction would basically mean my entire editing would just be organizing the transcript.

Hear, hear! Concerning your request, I am recommending the use of Speech Synthesis Markup Language (SSML) tags to implement it and provide additional control over how Overdub generates speech from the text here: https://feedback.descript.com/feature-requests/p/provide-additional-control-over-how-overdub-generates-speech-from-the-text-eg-us

(and, if you agree, please up vote :)
my request entitled "Provide additional control over how Overdub generates speech from the text (e.g., using SSML tags)" as using such tags would permit tweaking how Overdub generates speech well beyond space (pausing) between words.N

Frameworks: Upvoted & liked all comments in your thread linked above. This ONE addition would make Descript the hands-down, NO COMPETITION innovator in this field. I concur with everyone else that this should become the team's #1 priority. It's 2022 now... EVERYONE (except Descript) uses SSML. Couple SSML with the incredible power of the Overdub functionality, and you literally have no limits for studio quality TTS. Truly a MUST.
