This one shipped. It took a while. Shapes, text, scene backgrounds, progress bars, and captions all take gradient fills now. Open the color picker in the Properties panel and switch to the Gradient tab. Details: https://help.descript.com/visuals/color-stroke

There's a small workaround to this - you can use an existing layout that has a gradient in it, go into the scene, select that layer, and copy it, then paste it elsewhere. It's annoying, this should be something that you can add manually with the editor, not do a workaround.

Really wish this was happening! Would be so much easier to turn 16:9 videos into vertical ones, as you can add a transparent gradient on top of the video to fade to black or white.
