Allow local saves & deactivate constant autosave to cloud
Isabelle Roughol 🇫🇷🇪🇺🇬🇧🇺🇸🇦🇺🇰🇭
I like having my composition in the cloud, but the constant autosaving really slows the editing process down so much. I have to wait 15 seconds for a sentence I'm typing to show up on the screen! An option to work locally is also uber important when traveling. Not everyone lives in a big city with 200 Mbps Internet. Excessive latency & lack of local saving option are the two things that could make me give up Descript, even though I love it.

Cloud transcription without uploading all files
Sam Williams
I often work remotely and use a mobile hotspot. I want a way to make use of the cloud transcription. The issue is that if online then descript automatically tries to sync all files to the cloud.
I want a way to say "don't sync files to the cloud" but still have access to transcription.

Autosave is great, but honestly Descript is not dependable enough to detect all changes made to a project. If I make changes, I need to be able to manually trigger a save and know that if I leave or quit or my computer dies, that at the very least, my changes were saved.
Don't get too fancy and outpace your ability to create a stable, dependable app. We sink a ton of time into these productions and its gut wrenching to make a bunch of changes and it not be saved.

Offline Editing

Please allow for offline editing - the latency (I have a 1gig internet connection) and loading is nearly unbearable when trying to edit on both the website and application version of Descript. Is driving me to research alternatives.

can they please add this feature... I genuinely don't understand the logic like if it wants to be a serious editing software then of course people are going to be coming in with hours of footage, does it really want me to be uploading hours of proress footage every time to their servers? Make it make sense.

So this was suggested in 2019 and it's now 2024... can someone PLEASE add the option to disable cloud uploads? Terrible "feature" for this not to be optional!

Update. If you want _some_ assurance your stuff is being saved, if you're viewing Version History, you can click the options button in the pane and toggle "Show All Revisions" off and back on and it will force that bit of the UI to refresh with updated details and it looks like it saves more like every two minutes.

100 upvotes. I just lost 20 minutes of work because Descript doesn't have this feature. It's ridiculous for an audio program to be so freaking dependent on internet connection and web services.
I guess the idea from Descript's side is to allow for simultaneous editing on the same composition. But the reality is, the software is not dependable enough for user's to even try that. I edit projects in a team of three and because of this issue specifically, we communicate and take turns making our changes and try to make sure everything has synced before making any changes. It would be much better if these were synchronous processes: 1. Edit and save locally. 2. Sync to the cloud. 3. Collaborators sync from the cloud. 4. Collaborators edit. Repeat.
Finally, you can view your version history by going to File > Version History and it is anxiety inducing how infrequently Descript saves your changes. As I write it has been literally 10 minutes since it has saved (or else the UI isn't updating, which is also anxiety inducing). Once you've lost a chunk of work, you want to know for certain that your changes are actually being saved. Unfortunately, Descript doesn't offer that kind of assurance right now.

This was driving me and my household crazy. My solution is to use an app like NetLimiter for Windows or Bandwidth Limiter for Mac and limit this address -

At least prioritize the optimized file in the upload - right now my original files upload before optimized, which means it takes that much longer before I can publish, apply studio sound, etc.

Please please please. This presents a consistent usability issue for me when working with video.
