Smoother transitions when removing filler words from script
Nikolina Lednicki
Hi Descript Team,
I'd love to request an improvement to how cuts are handled when deleting words or filler words (like "um," "uh," and "like") from the script editor.
Currently, when I remove these words, the resulting video cut feels abrupt and choppy. The jump between the preceding and following words is jarring and looks unpolished, even when the underlying speech is clean.
What I'd love to see:
• Smart transition smoothing: Automatically apply a subtle audio crossfade and/or a short video dissolve/morph cut around the deletion point to blend the two clips together naturally.
• AI-powered frame blending: Use the surrounding frames to generate a smoother visual transition, similar to how some tools handle jump cuts with face-aware interpolation.
• Adjustable smoothing strength: Let users control how much smoothing is applied (e.g., a slider from "none" to "aggressive") so it works for both talking-head videos and other content types.
• Batch apply on filler word removal: When using the "Remove filler words" feature, apply the smoothing automatically across all deletions at once.
This would be a huge quality-of-life improvement, especially for creators who do a lot of cleanup editing and want a polished result without manually tweaking every single cut.
Thanks for building such a great tool! Looking forward to seeing this evolve!

Yes! What I'm finding is that I never do the remove all feature for 1) filler words or 2) Shorten word gaps.
I will use the AI tool to identify both. But I'll manually look at the track to ensure it's not cutting words it didn't properly identify, or the full length of words. So you might see on track, a word ending i.e. 'once'.... but the 'ce' sound goes longer into what Descript thinks is gap and it's not.
This happens a LOT. So it's something that definitely should be looked at more closely.
