Feature Request – Export Frame as Image for Thumbnails
Autumn Carter
Hi Descript Team,
I love using Descript for my video editing, and I appreciate how intuitive it is for content creation. One feature that would be incredibly helpful is the ability to export a single frame as an image directly from the timeline.
Currently, many YouTube creators, podcasters, and video marketers (myself included) need high-quality thumbnail images from our recordings. Right now, the process involves manually taking a screenshot, which can be inconsistent in quality and requires extra steps. Having a dedicated “Export Frame” option (with customizable resolution and format choices like PNG or JPG) would make it much easier to create professional thumbnails directly from Descript.
This feature would:
• Save time by eliminating the need for external screenshot tools.
• Ensure high-quality images without compression or artifacts.
• Streamline the workflow for creators who rely on Descript for content production.
I’d love to see this added in a future update! Thank you for continuously improving the platform—Descript has been a game-changer for my workflow.
Best,
Autumn Carter

That would be lovely.
I have a tedious workaround for this:
- Go to the timeline.
- Select the Range tool.
- Select a tiny bit of the scene starting at the moment you want a screenshot. Note: minimum selection size must be ~0.084s, or else "Current selection" will be disabled in the next step.
- Export "Current selection" to GIF.
- Externally convert to JPG.

Jared M. Smith I keep the original files and just use the option on the mac to right-click and copy image. Surprising that Descript cannot offer the same right-click option and give three options:
1) copy image to clipboard
2) save image to project
3) save image to Finder
That way, if you are using the web version, you would be able to easily get your images off of the page and save them locally or leave them on the cloud inside the project.

Images of mac video players vs Descript's "copy" which isn't the same as Copy Image or Copy Still Image.

J D I didn't know that QuickTime Player had Copy Image! Thanks for sharing. That saves me a big hassle.
What application is the menu with "Copy Frame Link" from?

Jared M. Smith That is from the App that is the most awesome that actually made me switch from PC to Mac after 40 years. Nothing is better and it is so powerful that I use it for everything. It is called DEVONthink. If all operating systems had that kind of Finder interface life would be great. If Descript had a Drive that behaved like DT3 I would be very happy. Searching, tagging, scripting and ability to work directly with web pages and pdf and video and audio make it invaluable to me.

Please implement this! Don't add any more fancy AI features until this simple thing is done. It will save so much time and faffing about. This is available in Premiere so was surprised not to see it in Descript.

Yes please otherwise I have to leave descript and go back to premier pro and do it
